Arachne4Dos

ARACHNE is "the" DOS graphical browser for the World Wide Web (WWW). It's a DOS program, suitable to use with MS-DOS, OpenDOS and Dr. DOS variants. You can easily download it as "freeware" for purely personal use, and as "shareware" for commercial use with registration readily available. Arachne supports HTML 4.0, frames, tables and animations. Arachne is an ideal alternative to a "Windows" browser for older "legacy" computers. A linux version has been developed, and is available for download from other sources.

WELCOME to Mel's Unofficial Web Site for the UK covering the Scottish Lion"ARACHNE" DOS Browser from Prague in the Czech  Republic. Website run and maintained personally by Mel Evans from his home in Peebles near the city of Edinburgh, Scotland UK, and his winter home in Santa Susanna, 58 km North of Barcelona, Spain.

"ARACHNE" is a fully featured Web Browser that fits on to a single floppy!, and yet still manages to receive and send e-mail, and browse the World Wide Web. It also shows frames, tables, graphics and supports HTML (hyper text mark-up language)Version 4.0 Transitional as used in the majority of the world's web pages. In addition it also supports showing of animated graphics, and can even itself be used as a simple HTML editor. You'll find FTP (file transfer protocol) facilities, and add-ons of the Cyrillic Alphabet for Russian and Eastern European users, and a simple WAV file player.

Pretty good for a program that unzips from a 1.44 floppy disc? But there's more! "ARACHNE" does all this using DOS, either "Micro$oft DOS" or "Open DOS" or "Dr DOS" variants, so this means you can use it to give that old 386/486 machine a new lease of life! When you spot one being thrown out into the junk-pile or the "skip" ("dumpster" in the US), you can rescue it and use it to run on the Web for next to nothing!

Turn off the graphics and the program will even run on a 286, or an XT, but don't expect blindingly fast performance on such a machine!

At the opposite end of the spectrum, it will run very well on a Pentium or above, and under W95/98 and above, but is at it's best on such a machine in a DOS prompt, and since it acts directly on the DOS level, there it does become very fast on routine tasks!

"ARACHNE" runs successfully on "freeserve" here in the UK, and has also been tested on "ecosse.net" without problems. It is also reported to run on "free-online", "tiscali" and other free Internet Service Providers without snags.

The latest version of "ARACHNE" can be downloaded free direct by selecting "download" from the navibar below, and on other pages on this site. Also, you might like to visit  another one of the ARACHNE4Dos Web Pages. Select a link below for your choice of action.
